Most areas back to normal after Worcester water main break

WORCESTER, Mass. — Most of the areas affected by a major water main break in Worcester are back to normal and the water is running clear, the city's department of public works announced around 4 p.m. Friday.

Officials said there was a break on a 24" high service water main sometime overnight Thursday into Friday under the southbound ramp from I-190 (Frontage Road). The break was located a hundred feet north of Shore Drive.

The state is responsible for the portion of roadway where the break occurred.

Crews were able to pinpoint the location of the break and shut the water off between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Friday.

Officials said no customers are connected to the section of the water main that was shut off, but the break caused widespread rusty water and low water pressure. They added the water is safe to use, but encouraged anyone who experiences rusty water to run their cold water taps for 20 minutes.

Anyone who still experiences rusty water after that is asked to contact the city's Department of Public Works at 508-929-1300 so crews can troubleshoot any lingering system issues.
