Mechanical issues force Steamship Authority to cancel 2 Sunday trips

WOOD'S HOLE, Mass. — More ferry issues for the Steamship Authority.

On Sunday, a mechanical issue with the Martha's Vineyard Governor caused two early morning trips to be canceled.

While investigating an alarm on the ship's gear monitoring system, the chief engineer found a broken wire on a sensor. The broken wire would not allow the gear to engage.

Maintenance staff reported to the vessel and helped fix the problem. The Coast Guard responded as well and cleared the vessel for service.

Meanwhile, the ferry's 5:30 a.m. trip from Woods Hole and the 6:30 a.m. return from Vineyard Haven had to be canceled.

Some vehicles were moved to the 6 a.m. trip aboard the Island Home and a crew was brought in to run extra trips on the freight vessel Sankaty.
