MBTA: New systems will make Commuter Rail tracking faster, more accurate

BOSTON — Improvements to the MBTA’s data processing will make train locations and arrival times more accurate, the transportation agency announced Thursday.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the upgrades will show up in users’ smartphone apps and on MBTA.com.

TrainLoc and Concentrate, the new programs implemented, “simplify and accelerate the processing capacity of real-time data leading to these improvements,” according to the MBTA.

TrainLoc transmits train locations and predicted arrival times up to two minutes faster than the previous system.

The MBTA says Concentrate will help the organization share that data with third party organizations for use in authorized apps faster.

A new API developed in house allows the MBTA to save nearly $10,000 per month in maintenance costs, according to the agency.
