Mayor says scooter rentals must be regulated

BOSTON — Boston's mayor is warning electric scooter rental companies that they'll need permission to operate in the city.

On Friday, California-based Bird announced their scooter rental service will be coming to nearby Cambridge and Somerville, taking administrations from both cities by surprise.

Bird has declined to comment on expansion into Boston, and has not given numbers on the amount of scooters it has in the two cities. Walsh says we want to have a "real good vetting process" to see if Boston should in fact have the service.

A driver's license is required to utilize the scooters, and Bird advises the use of helmets.
