Man convicted in 1988 shooting of state troopers arrested on new gun charges

BOSTON — The man who served decades in prison for shooting two Massachusetts State Police Troopers appeared back before a Boston judge.

Alonzo Dedrick came very close to killing at least one - if not two - troopers in Boston in 1988. Both troopers survived, but Dedrick got a lot of prison time for the shootings.

He was released a few years ago, but the 55-year-old was arraigned in Dorchester District Court Tuesday for new, serious charges including gun and drug charges and resisting arrest.

Dedrick was arrested Monday afternoon near Columbia and Washington in Dorchester. According to a report, Dedrick was the target of a weapons investigation after police were concerned he was walking the streets with a loaded gun.

Authorities allege when Boston officers tried to pull over a car Dedrick was a passenger in, the car refused to stop and Dedrick eventually hopped out of the car and tried to run away on foot, clutching an object in his waistband.

Following a brief pursuit, Dedrick was captured nearby. Police say as he tried to run away, he threw on the ground a fully loaded black semi-automatic handgun with 24 rounds and a clip containing nine more bullets.

Dedrick has a violent past. In 1988, he was arrested and later convicted for shooting two Mass. State troopers in Boston; the double shooting resulting from a violent struggle with the troopers. Dedrick was given a 33 to 55-year prison sentence, but he was released in 2015.

Now, Dedrick is facing a long list of new charges: unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a high capacity feeding device, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, armed career criminal, possession with intent to distribute drugs and resisting arrest.

Alonzo Dedrick is being held on $55,000 bail. He's due back in court next month.
