Man charged in connection to fatal October hit-and-run in Everett

EVERETT, Mass. — A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection to an early October hit-and-run that killed a motorcyclist in Everett.

Wilbert Charles has been charged with motor-vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident after causing death, and operating to endanger, the District Attorney said, in connection to the Oct. 2 crash that killed 59-year-old Michael Delp.

Charles was arraigned in Malden District Court on Monday.

Just before 6 a.m. on Oct. 2, Everett police went to the scene of the accident near the 600 block of Broadway. Delp, the motorcyclist, was unresponsive, and pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The preliminary investigation said that Charles was driving directly behind Delp on Broadway when Charles allegedly accelerated and struck Delp from behind, causing Delp to fall off his motorcycle.

Charles then allegedly hit Delp again before fleeing.

In court, prosecutors said that Charles flashed his high beams at Delp before allegedly running him over.

"One of the cameras catches the Nissan rogue going up and over both motorcycle and Mr. Delp to the point where the rear suspension of the Nissan leaves the ground and is airborne," prosecutors said.

"The cameras catch him pulling into his driveway, he then walks back to the scene, while the first responders are attending to Mr. Delp. He walks past the scene, on the opposite side of the street, never stopping, never making himself known."

Assistant DA Lee Hettinger says Charles went back to the scene a second time later that day. Police also found his license plate at the scene and questioned him, but he still didn't turn himself in.

After Charles' arraignment Monday, the judge allowed him to be released with several restrictions, including not driving, having a curfew and wearing a GPS monitor. The judge also says Charles cannot be in the entire city of Revere, where the victim’s family lives.

He's due back in court in December.
