‘They just speed’: Neighbors say fatal Malden crash happened at dangerous crossing

MALDEN, Mass. — Donna Romaine was in tears after hearing about the accident that left one man dead outside of her Malden apartment.

“I’m upset when I see somebody hurt,” says Romaine who ran outside after she heard the crash.

“I just heard it and I went out there and the two men were laying on the ground,” she said.

Malden’s Fire Chief confirmed for Boston 25 that two men were on a scooter that was struck. Police say one was killed. You could see the markings from police on the ground where the scooter was struck in the crosswalk along Broadway.

When Boston 25 arrived on the scene that scooter was stuck underneath the white Jeep Wrangler.

Malden Police confirmed that the second man on the scooter remains in the hospital.

Neighbors say this crosswalk which connects a bike path is dangerous.

“This intersection is bad because I stand here and press the buzzer and cars will come and people have seen they’ve almost hit me a couple of times,” said Steve Dahlberg who crosses here daily to get to the local pharmacy.

Romaine says there are a lot of close calls for people trying to cross.

“They just speed and they are on their cell phones and they don’t pay attention,” she said.

And she added that something needs to change before this happens again.

“Yeah it’s a dangerous spot,” said Romaine.

She says there was a three-car crash here just a few weeks back. She hopes this fatal collision will make he’s drivers and people crossing a little more cautious.

Police say the investigation into what happened continues.
