Shuttle buses to replace night time Red Line service between JFK/Umass and Braintree for two weeks

BOSTON — The MBTA announced on Wednesday that shuttle buses will replace night time Red Line Braintree branch services for two weeks beginning in August.

Shuttle bus service will go into effect at approximately 9:00 p.m. through the end of service from Mondays to Thursdays, between August 1st-4th and August 8th-11th, according to transit officials.

“We know any diversions in service can be frustrating for riders, but these evening diversions allow us to address necessary track repairs and speed restrictions on the Braintree branch, which will lead to a faster trip for Red Line riders,” MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said in a statement.

Among the work being done is tie replacement and track re-alignment, which the MBTA says will allow for faster trains.

“As the MBTA continues to work with the FTA on safety enhancements, the track and maintenance work to take place during these evening Red Line diversions will continue to allow the T to build a better and safer system for all of its riders and employees,” Poftak said.

The work starts just one week after a train rolled out of the rail yard and onto the tracks at Braintree Station and a few months after a runaway Red Line train rolled through Braintree station as passengers waited on the platform.

“The MBTA continues to prioritize safety enhancements and to address track work and maintenance associated with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) directives,” transit officials said in a press release.
