BOSTON, Mass. — ‘How was your weekend?’ That’s what Chris Rock asked the audience inside the Wilbur Theatre Wednesday night in Boston. It was his first public appearance since Will Smith slapped him onstage at the Oscars Sunday.

“Chris was hilarious,” said Tyler, who went to the show Wednesday night.

There was an added layer of anticipation as Rock made his first public appearance since the slap at the Oscars.

“The crowd welcomed him and he saw the support and he actually got a little emotional,” said Jerry Vincent, who went to Rock’s show.

No cameras were allowed inside, but people who went to the shows last night tell us Rock was greeted with a nearly two-minute-long standing ovation when he took the stage. Rock started off by saying “how was your weekend?”

“Didn’t really want to talk about the stuff that was going on,” said Tyler.

“He didn’t talk about Will Smith, he didn’t talk about the slap,” said Sharon Deraney, who went to the show.

I don’t have a bunch of s*** to say about that, so if you came here for that...I had written a whole show before this weekend. I’m still processing what happened, so at some point I’ll talk about that s***. It’ll be serious. It’ll be funny, but right now I’m going to tell some jokes

“I wish I could see him do something,” said Ty Harding, who attended the show. “I mean, talk about it a little bit, but he didn’t which I respect.”

“I can appreciate that cause I think he took such a high road in the whole incident and I think it makes him look better,” said Lori Curry, after walking out of the Wilbur Wednesday night.

Will Smith has since publicly apologized for slapping Rock onstage at the Oscars after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock fans believe the act was uncalled for.

“He’s a comedian, I don’t necessarily think that there’s a line so to speak,” said Kristen who went to the show. “I don’t agree with what happened and I’m surprised and glad that he kept his composure when he was doing his job.”

Long-time supporters of the comedian have spoken out and come from all over to see his show, and they weren’t disappointed.

“I happened to buy tickets before all this happened so showed up and thought, man this is the best time I bought tickets for something,” said Jordan Hamilton of St. Louis.

People told Boston 25 News Rock got a little emotional at the beginning, even seeing a tear on his face.

Rock has four more shows at the Wilbur, and then his comedy tour kicks off Saturday in New Jersey.
