Remains of missing Mass. native, founder of addiction recovery app discovered in California

SANTA MONICA, California — Human remains that were discovered last month in California have been identified as a missing Massachusetts native who founded the addiction recovery app Sober Grid, authorities said.

The remains discovered in the courtyard of an abandoned property on Santa Monica Boulevard in Santa Monica on April 25 were identified Monday as 41-year-old Beau Mann, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. He had been reported missing to the Los Angeles Police Department on Dec. 4, 2021.

Sober Grid said that Mann disappeared on Nov. 30, 2021, after getting in an Uber outside of a 7-Eleven located near the company’s Los Angeles office. While in the Uber.

Mann is said to have texted 911, but never responded to follow-up texts from police. He was ultimately dropped off in Santa Monica and despite exhaustive efforts to find him, he was never heard from again.

The Santa Monica Daily Press reported that Mann had recently returned from a family trip to his native Massachusetts when he disappeared during what appeared to be a routine trip to a local convenient store. The Worcester Telegram previously reported that Mann was from Oxford.

At the time of his disappearance, Mann’s mother told the Telegram that he had been in town for Thanksgiving with family and that nothing seemed unusual when he left to head back to California with his assistant.

In a statement, Sober Grid wrote, “Beau was our light. After an experience in his early years with drugs and addiction, he turned his focus and passion toward helping others. In 2015, he created the first digital app to house a 24/7, online, worldwide community for people in recovery.”

Anyone with information related to Mann’s disappearance and death is urged to contact SMPD Detective Ismael Tavera at 310-458-2256.
