BOSTON — Federal prosecutors want Malden native and Super Happy Fun America leader Mark Sahady to remain locked up for his alleged role in the US Capitol insurrection.
Sahady, 46, faces a virtual detention hearing Thursday afternoon at the U.S. Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston’s Seaport.
Sahady and another Massachusetts native, 59-year-old Suzanne Ianni, were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the January 6th mob in D.C.
Both are charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.
Ianni was released after her arrest on the agreement that she remain in the state except to attend a court hearing in D.C. next week. The Natick Town Meeting member is also banned from attending any organized protest, rally or demonstration and has been ordered to stay away from the Massachusetts State House.
Sahady remains in federal custody after prosecutors said he poses a “serious risk of obstructing justice if released.”
According to prosecutors, Sahady made “concerning” remarks as he was arrested and told his mother not to turn over his cellphone or let anyone in his room.
FBI agents identified Sahady and Ianni through social media. Court documents allege photos show the both of them standing outside and inside the Capitol building, confirming the two were together.
Sahady’s attorneys claim he only went to Washington to listen to a speech by former President Donald Trump and to peacefully protest the certification of electoral votes.
Sahady and Ianni are involved with the organization Supper Happy Fun America, which held a “straight pride parade” in Boston in August 2019.
