Power outages remain, more rain in forecast after nor’easter

BOSTON — Utility crews have another long day ahead with snapped poles and tree branches still covering wires in many South Shore towns.

More than 160,000 customers in the state are facing their third day without power, according to online tallies from utility companies Eversource and National Grid.

The outages are concentrated mostly on the state’s South Shore and Cape Cod. In coastal towns south of Boston such as Hingham, Cohasset, and Norwell, nearly 70% of residents were without power as of Friday morning. Utilities in neighboring Rhode Island reported hundreds of additional outages.

As of 9:30 a.m., over 3,000 customers in Cohasset, roughly 80 percent of the town, were still without power. The Cohasset Police Department opened charging stations at Beechwood and Willcutt Commons for anyone in town who may need devices charged. Near the town common, there were six bucket trucks and crewmembers out surveying damage and repairing snapped utility poles.

A spokesperson for National Grid told Boston 25 News that across the South Shore, about 150 utility poles were damaged by the nor’easter, and it can take eight hours to replace just one pole. The company expects most residents across the South Shore to have electrical service restored by Saturday.
