‘Taken too soon’: Family of murdered Marshfield couple speaks out as suspect is held without bail

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — A man charged in the brutal murder of a Marshfield couple late last month was returned to Massachusetts this week and ordered held without bail Friday.

Christopher Keeley, 27, of Weymouth, was arraigned in Plymouth District Court on two counts of murder in the deaths of Carl and Vicki Mattson, a couple in their 70s, who were found “bludgeoned and stabbed” in their home on Gotham Hill Drive on November 29.

In a statement issued following Keeley’s court appearance, the Mattson family remembered Carl and Vicki as loving parents, grandparents, friends, and colleagues who will be missed dearly.

“Buddy and Vicki were taken from us way too soon, in a manner that they never deserved. Highschool sweethearts and partners for over 50 years, Bud and Vicki were the most generous, caring, and loving people and anyone who knew them would agree. They appreciated each day with their family and friends, proud of their family, and couldn’t wait to spend more time with them,” the family said. “Their light will continue to shine on through their good works and relationships they created and fostered over the years. As we wander down this path of grief and anger, we lean on our faith that justice for Buddy and Vicki will be served, both in this lifetime and beyond.”

Investigators identified Keeley, who had fled the area, as a suspect in the killings and a warrant was issued for his arrest shortly after the victims were discovered. Keeley was later picked up in Miami Beach after getting into an altercation and allegedly hitting a man in the head with a hammer.

Keeley waived extradition in Florida earlier this month when he was captured after spending days on the run following the alleged murders. While in court, a contentious Keeley told the judge he was ready to stop running.

State troopers drove down to Florida this week and transported Keeley back to the Bay State for his arraignment.

The victims’ dog was also discovered dead in the house, and their Jeep Wrangler was recovered in the parking lot of a Walmart in Avon. Boston 25 also learned that Keeley had Carl Mattson’s credit cards and was using them after the murder.

Keeley is due back in court on Feb. 28 for a probable cause hearing.

An investigation into the murders remains ongoing.
