Mulch fire spreads to Maynard group home, chars outside of building

MAYNARD, Mass. — Crews battled dry and windy conditions Tuesday afternoon while trying to put out a fire at a group home in Maynard.

Firefighters responding to an address on Second Street around 12:30 p.m. encountered heavy smoke and flames on arrival, according to the Maynard Fire Department. The fire initially started in a patch of mulch but due to the dry conditions, the flames extended to the house, burning up the building’s exterior and into the attic.

Companies requested more manpower to the scene and struck a second alarm.

Fire crews initiated an aggressive interior attack and put out the flames, containing the damage to the outside of the house and the attic.

“Considering the dangerous fire conditions today and the amount of fire found on arrival, companies did a fantastic job of attacking this fire quickly and getting it knocked down,” said Captain Mike Parr.

There were no reports of any injuries. All residents in the home have been displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews from Sudbury, Boxborough, Concord, Acton, Hudson, Stow and Wayland assisted Maynard firefighters on scene.
