Man stabbed at Mary O’Malley Park in Chelsea, police say

CHELSEA, Mass. — A man in his 30s was stabbed and seriously injured in a Chelsea park late Monday afternoon, the city’s police chief said.

The victim suffered stab wounds to his face and neck area, and was in serious condition in the intensive care unit at a Boston hospital, Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes said.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Kyes said.

Mary O’Malley Park by the waterfront was busy on Monday early evening, as many were out enjoying the sun, and a group of women taking a yoga class.

“Everyone is home, sitting down with the pandemic, especially the gyms are closed. We were moved, because when we got here, the police officer said there has been an incident, we need to have you move over,” said Kimberly Burton, who was at the park for a yoga class.

“The fire engines came down, the police cars were all here,” said Cate Maas from Chelsea.

The stabbing occurred before 5 p.m. at Mary O’Malley Park in Chelsea on the waterfront.

Sky25 captured video of the scene, and it showed an area of the park cordoned off with yellow police tape.

“We always come pretty much every day, play softball. For us, it was shocking,” said Rebeca Valencuela who was out playing with her kids.

Throughout the night, Massachusetts State Police gathered evidence, even searching through the park’s garbage cans.

“We were like, ‘What’s going on?‘ You never see this happening,” said Valencuela.

Police have not identified the victim, or what the argument was over.

No arrests have been made.

Police said they will continue to search for the suspect, as the park is a very busy area during the summer months.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating the stabbing, which occurred at a state park.
