Lifeguard transported, 4 suspects arrested after stabbing at Worcester’s Bell Pond

WORCESTER, Mass. — A Bell Pond lifeguard was transported after he was allegedly stabbed on July 4 at approximately 6:30 p.m. in Worcester. Worcester Police officers were first alerted to the incident after receiving a report of several males attacking a lifeguard on duty.

Upon arrival, officers found a 17-year-old male lifeguard suffering from a stab wound. Officers were able to render medical aid and have the victim transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Officers were able to investigate and discovered that, before the stabbing incident, a small group of males was smoking and drinking in the park. Park officials advised them to stop, or they would have to leave the park.

This resulted in several people leaving without causing an incident, but one male became verbally aggressive and threatening. The male eventually left the park but came back later with another small group before attacking the lifeguard.

During the attack, the victim was hit with a stick and stabbed, police say. Shortly after, police searched the area for the suspects involved and called over the radio to start a foot pursuit on Wilson Street.

Officers eventually find the suspect who allegedly stabbed the victim, later identified as Celestine Bigirimana, 22, of Worcester. Bigirimana is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, trespassing, resisting arrest, and possession of an open container of alcohol.

Police told Boston 25 three other males emerged from the woods and started entering East Park. Officers detained these males after developing probable cause that they were the suspects who attacked the lifeguard.

Mohamed Abdullahi, 19, of Worcester, was placed under arrested and is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and disturbing the peace. A 17-year-old juvenile was also arrested and is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace, and disorderly conduct. Lastly, Melquan Jefferson, 23, of Worcester, was placed under arrested and is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace, and disorderly conduct.

The Worcester Police Department told Boston 25 each suspect is expected to be arraigned in court.
