METHUEN, Mass. — The human remains found by the FBI in a wooded area in Methuen have been identified as a Manchester man who had been missing since mid-March, police say.
On Friday, a day after the remains were found following a two-day investigation at the site, the Office of the Medical Examiner positively identified the remains to be that of Zakhia Charabati, 52, of Manchester, NH.
Charabati had been reported missing by family members on Saturday, March 14.
After searching for Charabati for nearly four months, authorities found his remains buried in the back of the property at 145 Milk Street.
“For almost four months, the family of Zakhia Charabati have been patiently awaiting news of his whereabouts. Although not the result they were hoping for, we are pleased to have assisted in bringing them some much-needed closure. Investigative efforts to pursue those responsible for Mr. Charabati’s death will continue,” said Joseph R. Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division.
Lawrence Police, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, and the Manchester Police Department in New Hampshire all assisted in the search and investigation.
The family has been notified of the death.
