Home collapses on Amory Street in Cambridge Tuesday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Marie Vieira has lived on Amory Street in Cambridge for 36 years, and she said she wasn’t surprised to see her next-door neighbor’s home collapse Tuesday night.

“The last 20 years living next to that eyesore has not been fun,” Vieira said.

Neighbors said the rear third of the home, mostly blocked by trees, crumbled to pieces.

“I have walked past this house numerous times and it looked like at any moment if you sneezed on it, it was just going to literally collapse,” said Todd Beal, who lives nearby.

Cambridge fire officials said one person, who was inside at the time, escaped without injuries. Neighbors said that homeowner is usually in and out of the home and hasn’t fixed it in years. Now, some neighbors are worried about any more damage the home could do to their block.

“I’d be more concerned because the condition; that just screams like I can’t wait for a fire to start and take out everything around it,” Beal said.

“I’m really hopeful that the rest of the house doesn’t collapse tonight and hit my house,” Vieira said.

Neighbors are hoping after the collapse the city will do something about the poor condition of the house.
