BOSTON — Commuters across Boston are adjusting to significant service disruptions on the MBTA Green Line as crews begin a major maintenance and upgrade project that will keep portions of the line suspended through Aug. 16.
The shutdown affects large sections of the Green Line, prompting riders to use shuttle buses and alternate routes while the work is completed.
Boston 25 observed a steady stream of commuters boarding and exiting yellow shuttle buses Monday morning near Copley Square at the corner of Stuart and Dartmouth streets.
According to the MBTA, riders should plan for an additional 25 minutes of travel time during the suspension.
The service disruptions include:
- B Branch: Government Center to Babcock Street
- C Branch: Government Center to Cleveland Circle
- D Branch: North Station to Fenway
- E Branch: North Station to Heath Street
The MBTA said there will be no shuttle service on the E Branch. Instead, riders are encouraged to use the fare-free Route 39 bus.
Transit officials said the shutdown is necessary for two major improvement projects, including critical signal upgrades in the Central Green Line tunnel. The agency says the work will improve reliability and accessibility for riders in the long term.
Not all commuters were prepared for the changes.
“Then I realized that I had to take a shuttle bus and I had assumed that it would go directly to Fenway station, but I ended up getting off at Kenmore,” rider Carmen said. “I understand that. I’m all for it, but I wasn’t prepared.”
The MBTA has posted shuttle bus locations and alternative travel options on its website. The Green Line service changes are expected to remain in effect through Sunday, Aug. 16.
