Green Line suspension impacts some fans heading to Fenway

BOSTON — Some fans had to find alternate ways to get to the Red Sox games over the weekend, with parts of the MBTA Green Line suspended for the next week.

The suspension is scheduled from Aug. 8 through Aug. 16 so the MBTA can work on two major projects.

“It’s a little inconvenient that the Green Line’s down on a game day, but it is what it is,” one fan heading to the Red Sox game said.

The suspensions include portions of its B, C, and D branches, and a majority of the E branch.

“It was a little bit of a pain, it took us longer to get here, and it was a little crowded,” another fan who attended the game said.

“When you can’t take the train in and you’re forced to pay $75 for parking, it’s gonna mess stuff up,” Colin Beaupre, who attended the game, said.

Some fans who couldn’t get in to or around the city by T said they were forced to seek more expensive options.

“That’s why you take the train. You take the train cause it’s easier and cost-friendly,” Beaupre said.

While other fans were incovenienced in other ways, like walking father to the game in hot and humid weather.

“Luckily through Newbury... like they closed the roads down so we could just walk down that way, but it’s hot. So it just kind of impacted our coming here,” Javier Carreno, another fan who attended the game, said. He also said it impacted how long it took to get there. “Probably like 20 minutes, 25 minutes, a lot longer.”

But not everyone had complaints about the suspension, with some fans heading to the game taking advantage of a temporary shuttle service being offered for some branches in the meantime.

“I was a little surprised, I actually thought it would take a lot longer to get here than it did, but it was quick and we really didn’t hit any traffic,” one woman who came with her family to the game from the Babcock Street T stop said. “It was great, we only waited like a minute and we got on. It was air conditioned, and it brought us right here where we would have gotten off anyways for the Red Sox game.”

The MBTA said the work includes critical signal upgrades within the central Green Line tunnel, which it said will create a safer work environment and more reliable service. The C Branch Accessibility Improvements Project will also make some stops more accessible for riders.
