Equipment issue at Eversource substation causes fire, power outages in Newton

NEWTON, Mass. — An equipment issue at an Eversource substation caused a small fire and thousands of power outages in Newton on Monday morning.

The fire broke out shortly before 11 a.m. and the issue knocked out power to about 2,500 customers in the area, an Eversource spokesman said in statement.

“Our first priority is working with public safety officials to make the area safe. We have restored power to approximately 600 customers using remote switching,” the spokesman said. “Our crews will work to restore power to all remaining customers as quickly as safely possible.”

One Eversource worker was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause if the issue remains under investigation.
