Commuter alert: MBTA’s closure of the Green Line D Branch begins this weekend

BOSTON — Some MBTA riders will face a new challenge starting this weekend when the “D” branch of the Green Line shuts down for the first of three nine-day closures.

Less than a week after the Orange Line reopened following an unprecedented monthlong shutdown, it’s the Green Line’s turn for upgrades.

The closures will affect service between Riverside through Kenmore Square and shuttle buses will be running instead of trolleys.

The first nine-day closure will run from Saturday, September 24 to Sunday, October 2.

The second nine-day closure is from Saturday, October 8 to Sunday, October 16.

The third and final nine-day closure is planned from Saturday, October 22 to Sunday, October 30.

“These kinds of full-access diversions allow the T to accelerate investments and improvements across the system,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak.

Workers will be replacing track, and station crossings.

The T is also installing equipment for the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) which is being put in place to help avoid collisions and for speed enforcement.

The MBTA completed three other Green Line diversions this past summer on the B, C, and E branches.

The T says more than 6,000 feet of track will be replaced during the 27 days of closures.

Parking lots will also be shut down and off-limits to commuters at Waban and Eliot stations during the three closures.

The T also says that shuttle buses will not stop at Beaconsfield station during the closures, due to narrow roads in the area.
