Bus service extended a week on Orange Line as MBTA probes whether new cars caused derailment

(Sky25)

BOSTON — Bus service on the section of the Orange Line undergoing repairs after a low-speed derailment earlier this month will be extended for another week as additional repairs are completed, the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority announced Thursday.

Shuttle buses between Oak Grove and Sullivan Square stations will continue until April 11 “to allow for additional safety and reliability improvements that support the new Orange Line fleet and continue the replacement of infrastructure past its useful life,” the MBTA said in a statement.

The T said in a statement it still hasn’t determined the cause of the March 16 derailment near Wellington station but “out of an abundance of caution, the new Orange Line and Red Line cars continue to be out of service as vehicle engineers perform a thorough analysis of the cars’ performance.”

The T said it’s working with the manufacturer of the new trains to determine if “anything vehicle-related could have been a contributing factor in the derailment.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
