BOSTON — One of Boston’s most recognizable landmarks is undergoing a major transformation.
The iconic Citgo sign in Kenmore Square is being replaced after engineers determined decades of exposure to New England weather had deteriorated key structural components of the beloved landmark.
Citgo announced plans last year to replace the sign, which has stood above Kenmore Square for generations and become a fixture of the Boston skyline. The new sign is expected to be illuminated in November.
As part of the replacement project, some letters and original pieces from the historic sign will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting charity.
The letter “C” from the original sign recently went on display at Cornwall’s Tavern, giving Bostonians a chance to see a piece of the landmark up close before it finds a new home.
The replacement sign will remain above Kenmore Square, though the original plan called for repositioning it to improve visibility as Boston’s skyline continues to evolve with new development and taller buildings.
Construction crews are creating a new support structure about 120 feet away on the same rooftop, where the landmark will be reassembled, restored, and raised about 30 feet higher.
For many New Englanders, the Citgo sign is more than just an advertisement. The landmark has long served as a symbol of Boston and a familiar sight for Red Sox fans making their way to and from nearby Fenway Park.
