Boston teacher hospitalized after intervening in fight between girls

BOSTON — A Boston school teacher was hospitalized on Wednesday afternoon after intervening in a fight between a group of girls, according to police.

The fight happened after school near the campus of the Young Achievers Science And Math Pilot School on Outlook Road in Mattapan.

Officials said the teacher, who has not been identified, was trying to break up a fight when she was kicked and punched several times.

Both the teacher and the student were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests have been made.

Boston Public Schools released a statement regarding the incident:

We are shocked and deeply saddened by this news. All Boston Public Schools community members deserve to feel safe and free from bullying and violence. Nothing is more important than the safety of our children and staff and providing our young people with a learning environment that makes them feel physically and emotionally safe, respected, and academically challenged. We are committed to ensuring that all students have access to the social-emotional support they need, and we are grateful to the school staff, BPS Safety Services, and the Boston Police for their quick response. We will not tolerate any forms of violence or aggression within our community.

The Boston Teachers Union released the following statement:

We are deeply troubled by this incident and all incidents of violence where educators and students are harmed, and we are awaiting more information from the Boston Public Schools and other city officials who are formally investigating the incident. We have been at the school to provide resources and support, and to hear from our educators about how to ensure the whole school community has what it needs to heal and move forward. The educators of the Boston Teachers Union are caring and committed to their students and it is particularly distressing when that devotion puts them in harm’s way. We have reached out to the impacted member and have been assured that the school system is reaching out to the impacted student and others affected as well. We are thinking of the entire YA community at this time and will continue to advocate for the resources and supports all of our schools need to prevent violence.

Boston police are actively investigating the incident.
