Body of missing man recovered from Upper Mystic Lake in Winchester

WINCHESTER, Mass. — Dive teams recovered the body of a missing man on Tuesday morning following an extensive search in Winchester at Upper Mystic Lake.

Police have identified the victim as Alford Garcia, 52, of Lynn.

Investigators say Garcia fell off an inflatable float in an unsupervised area of the Medford Boat Club and Shannon Beach around 5:50 p.m. on the Fourth of July, according to Massachusetts State Police.

“The investigation to date by State Police detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office suggests that Mr. Garcia attempted to make it back to shore, became tired and began to struggle in the water, and then went beneath the water,” according to a statement from State Police.

“Witnesses attempted to rescue Mr. Garcia but were not able to locate him,” said State Police.

“This morning, MSP divers deployed a side-scan sonar device, which detects anomalies or objects underwater. The sonar detected an image at a depth of about 13 feet in an area with practically zero visibility to the human eye,” said State Police. “Divers then dove onto the target image, determined it was Mr. Garcia’s body, and recovered him. The State Police Crime Scene Services Section documented the recovery area.”

Garcia’s death remains under investigation.
