Cape Cod coyote who was mistaken for lost puppy released into wild with foster sibling

BARNSTABLE, Mass. — They grow up so fast.

After being mistaken for a lost German Shepherd puppy earlier this year, one orphaned coyote pup is hearing the call of the wild and has been released following months of rehab, according to authorities.

The Cape Wildlife Center announced on Wednesday the coyote is just over 40 pounds now and has been active in his large outdoor enclosure. His rehab has taken a total of 6 months and officials say he is exhibiting all of the correct behaviors and skills to be reacclimated into the wild.

The male coyote will not be going alone, however, his foster sister will also be joining him. The pair were both orphaned since they were just a few weeks old and have been inseparable ever since, according to wildlife officials.

“Releasing them as a unit will hopefully increase their survival rate in the wild,” a Cape Wildlife Center spokesperson wrote in a social media post. “While some coyotes may choose to part ways after release something tells us these two may be bonded for life.”
