Air quality alert issued as Canadian wildfire smoke returns to New England

BOSTON — Smoke from the Canadian wildfires will return on Saturday, and an air quality alert has been issued for New England.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued the alert from midnight Saturday until midnight on Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, an air quality alert means that fine particulate concentrations within the region may approach or exceed levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The air will be unhealthy for sensitive children and adults, such as those with asthma, lung or heart disease, and older adults.

Sensitive children and adults should limit prolonged outdoor activity.
