AUBURN, Mass. — One person was killed and four others were injured a three-vehicle wreck on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn on Thursday morning, authorities said.
Troopers responding to a report of a crash on the eastbound side of I-90 shortly before 7:30 a.m. found a 2013 Mazda VST, a 2020 Mazda CX5, and a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had been involved in a serious crash, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The operator of the Mazda VST, a 23-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, was taken to UMass Memorial Hospital-Lakeside, where he was pronounced dead. Three passengers who were riding in his vehicle suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Mazda CX5, a 60-year-old man from Sturbridge man, was taken to Saint Vincent Hospital. There was no immediate word on the extent of his injuries.
The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was not injured in the crash.
The names of those involved in the crash haven‘t been released.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the Mazda VST sideswiped the 2020 Mazda CX5, forcing it through the guardrail and down the embankment, according to state police. The Mazda VST then slammed into the back of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Multiple lanes on the highway were closed for several hours during the morning commute.
An investigation remains ongoing.
