Local high school student suffers serious injury during football practice

A local high school student suffered a serious injury on the football field during a practice at the Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon, and the Bourne Fire Department told Boston 25 News that the injuries were serious enough to have to fly the student to a trauma center.

"He has severe, non-life-threatening injuries at this time," Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Haden said.

Superintendent Robert Dutch told us the student is a senior on the varsity team, and the injury occurred during a regular practice.

Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Haden said firefighter paramedics rushed to the field around 4 p.m. Tuesday after the incident.

"We were called for a male patient on the football field that had a laceration, and his helmet was removed prior to arrival for evaluation by the staff at the field," Haden said.

The laceration was to the student's head, and first responders determined they needed to transport him by MedFlight to a trauma hospital.

However, the helicopter was unable to land due to fog in the area.

"Firefighters/paramedics transported the patient, and met the MedFlight helicopter at Beth Israel-Plymouth Hospital," Haden said.
