LOWELL, Mass. — Shots rang out near a Little League baseball game in Haverhill causing the teams to all but call it quits for the season, that was until the coaches got a call from the major leagues.
Red Sox AA farm team the Lowell Spinners has offered up their field for the Crimson and Shamrocks to play on.
"They didn't want to play back in that same field and they actually were upset about the whole game and they were ready to give up the season,” Shamrocks coach Greg Spero said.
But the Minor League offer had everyone excited.
"We were all jacked. All the kids were really excited. I've never seen them as excited as they are tonight,” Crimson coach Tom Crockett said.
Thursday night the Little League players got to see their names on the big screen and hear them read over the loud speaker.
While the players took their game to the professional grass, their friends and families watched on from the stadium seating.
“It brought such energy back to the team. They were so excited and it brought us all together,” Spero said.
For the coaches of both teams, the important thing is that the players can enjoy the game they love in a place where they feel safe.
"We really wanted to make sure the kids weren't scared to play baseball again,” Spero said.
The teams have decided not to return to Swasey Field despite a stepped up police presence and have arranged to use other fields for the rest of the season.
