Man shot and killed in brazen daytime shooting in Jamaica Plain

BOSTON — Boston Police are investigating a fatal shooting in broad daylight Wednesday in the middle of a busy street on the Roxbury-Jamaica Plain line. The victim, who police said was in his mid-30s, was shot around 2:20 p.m. while sitting in a car on Washington Street, witnesses said and video confirmed.

Dash-cam video shows the gunman run down the street and fire a gun into the car. Surveillance video from a nearby shop shows the shooter then sprint down Washington Street and turn a corner before disappearing. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police speaking at an afternoon news conference did not say whether they had located the gunman. But Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long assured the public the shooting does not appear to be random.

Rosana Rivera, who owns nearby Latino Beauty Salon, told Boston 25 News she had several children in her salon getting fresh haircuts for the new school year when the gunfire erupted.

“One of the girls said, ‘Somebody’s shooting! Close the door!’” Rivera said. “It was very scary. We thought the person was going to start shooting inside there.”

Rivera quickly slammed the doors shut and locked them as people outside began running for cover, she said.

“I didn’t know what to do,” Rivera said. “So, I was telling the people to go on the floor, go to the back, because we didn’t know what we were running from.”

Rivera said she helped console the victim’s pregnant wife or fiancée, who lives at a nearby apartment and heard the gunfire.

“She was upstairs, and she heard the shots,” Rivera said. “She was looking through the window. When she came downstairs and saw her husband, he was shot inside her car.”

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tips can remain anonymous.

“This is a middle-of-the-day, brazen shooting,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins. “This is a vibrant community. Hardworking people work here, and they deserve to be safe.”
