Gov. Baker’s solution to long lines for booster shots

BOSTON — As of Monday, walk-ins were still welcome at the Cambridge Health Alliance, but there will be no more walk-ins for the rest of the week. The vaccine center has had so many people trying to get a vaccination or booster shot, they are now doing appointments only.

“The good news here is there is a lot more demand for boosters,” Gov. Baker said. “A few weeks ago, we had thousands and thousands of open appointments available every day in Massachusetts. We still have many appointments available every day. The issue in some places for people is whether or not it’s convenient for them.”

Governor Baker said two weeks ago there were tons of open booster appointments, but demand has skyrocketed since the state expanded eligibility to all residents.

“We are doing over 50,000 shots per day, and if we can find a way to work with our local colleagues in local government we will come up with ways to put more shots on the table,” Gov. Baker said. “My goal is to make sure everyone who is eligible for a booster wants one and gets one because it is an important part of staying safe especially through this part of the season.”

He recognizes people may not be able to get appointments right away and might have to wait a few days or drive a little farther than just going to the neighborhood pharmacy. We asked if the solution could be a mass vaccination site.

“We have 1,000 locations across Massachusetts right now where people can get vaccinated and I think our goal is to see if we can put together more,” Gov. Baker said. “It would be faster and easier for us to do this if we were in conjunction with our colleagues in local government because it’s a faster solution than some of the larger sites.”

He adds there are pop-up sites the state will make available in areas where there is a larger demand or lack of appointment availability, and he wants to see more of those.
