Harvard to eliminate single-sex social clubs

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Harvard is looking to eradicate single-sex social clubs.

The issue has been up for discussion for a while and it appears the school is finally implementing the plan.

A committee is investigating the decision, but the dean has already made it clear the clubs will need to change.

It includes things like fraternities or sororities, but not sports teams or other campus organizations. The decision would impact off-campus clubs only accepting all men or all women.

People who support making these social clubs co-ed, including the Dean of Harvard, say this is an issue of discrimination and single sex clubs are outdated.

But people who want to keep the clubs say Harvard is abusing power by forcing them to go co-ed.

Harvard officials have said starting this fall, students who join the social clubs will not be allowed to hold leadership positions in campus organizations and sports teams. Another part of the punishment would be the Dean of Harvard would not recommend these students for scholarships including the Rhodes Scholarship or the Fulbright Scholarship.

The committee that's reviewing the issue has not made their final decision public, but it appears the social clubs will become co-ed.
