GLOUCESTER, Mass. — The Gloucester mayor has agreed to allow the police chief to retire in January 2017, reversing the decision to fire him.
Chief Leonard Campanello will remain on paid leave through Jan. 3, 2017, which is his contractual retirement date. The agreement, which was reached through Campanello's legal representatives, ensures that any potential hearing, attorney fees or negotiations are over with and there's no future court action.
Deputy Chief John McCarthy will lead the department in the interim.
Campanello was terminated last week for lying to the mayor's office during an investigation.
