WESTWOOD — Being outside on Thursday just hurt. Even this news crew tried to minimize the amount of time we spent outside while doing our story.
But for people who are in the food delivery business, they don’t have a choice. They make their money during temperatures like this.
At Islington Pizza in Westwood, the phones were going off the hook on Thursday night.
“It’s just hustle hustle hustle,” said said Armand Storlazzi, a pizza delivery driver.
And hot pizzas kept coming out of the oven.
Besides having patience because they’re so busy, the difference Thursday night, than any other usual night, was the bitter cold.
“When it’s icy out, it’s difficult. Tonight is icy," said Storlazzi.
For many pizza delivery workers like Storlazzi, getting around on a night like this can be a challenge.
In many areas, there is nothing but a sheet of ice.
And the temperatures keep dropping.
It’s also a challenge to keep the food warm in thermal hot bags.
Boston 25 meteorologist Vicki Graf has been monitoring the temperatures.
The key for Storlazzi in temperatures like this is wearing layers.
“I have a T-shirt underneath, long shirt, then a hood, and boots,” he said.
On nights like Thursday night, the drivers do up to 80 deliveries a night. It doesn’t matter what the temperatures are, hot or extreme cold. They have to work hard to feed their families.
Shop owner Maria Tassiopoulos had some advice on dealing with the cold and getting around.
“It’s crazy out there. It’s Christmastime, the traffic is bad. Try to stay warm and be safe,” she said.
