FOX25 investigates list of issues at Westwood MBTA station

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- FOX25 is investigating a long list of maintenance issues at a local MBTA and Amtrak station. Viewers emailed us saying the escalators and escalators at the Route 128 station in Westwood have been broken for months, well before a single flake of snow fell this winter. Our Kerry Cavanaugh went to the station in Westwood Tuesday to find out who is responsible for the repairs and what's taking so long to complete them.

Elevators aren't running and escalators aren't moving. We found a sea of yellow tape at the Route 128 station in Westwood. Commuter rail rider Shan Suisse says multiple elevators and escalators have been out of service there for months, in some cases years.

And being 6 months pregnant doesn't help.

"I get winded pretty easy at this point," Suisse said.

She says she sent emails and tweets to the MBTA and contacted Amtrak, which also runs trains through there. Neither agency responded.

"That's the most frustrating part," Suisse said.

We contacted the MBTA and Amtrak about the maintenance issues and the MBTA emailed us saying that repairs are the responsibility of Amtrak.

The MBTA attributed some equipment failures to the recent extreme weather.

Passengers there said the winter storms really could not be blamed for these things being out of service for so long. And they showed us some proof. They say it's right on the inspection stickers, one dated July, of 2014.

Suisse said, "It's actually sad that since July no one's actually done anything to fix this and in the meantime, more things have gone wrong."

The MBTA says van service is available to take riders from the garage to the platforms, however, we didn't see anything posted about that when we were there.

The T also says this spring all equipment at this station will be replaced. The project will take 140 days.

Riders think something should be done sooner.

"I guess it's not a priority," Suisse said.
