Husband held without bail in fatal shooting of wife in Everett

EVERETT, Mass. — A woman is dead after her husband shot her while she was inside her car Wednesday morning.

Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said officers responded Wednesday morning to Central Avenue in Everett for a report of a fatal shooting. Ersilia Matarazzo, 50, was fatally shot by her husband 55-year-old Emilio Matarazzo while she was sitting in her car before going to work. Ryan says Ersilia suffered several gunshot wounds to the torso.

Emilio then went to the police station and turned himself in. While a motive was unclear Wednesday, the DA said the couple was "in some stage" of divorce. Erisilia had temporarily moved in with her parents.

It's unclear exactly what kind of gun Emilio used in the shooting, but officials say he does have a license to carry.

The DA also says there is no court history or restraining order that they are aware of.

Matarazzo was held overnight at the Everett Police Station and was ordered held without bail Thursday morning.

Police locked down Everett High School during a search after the shooting was reported, but that lockdown was lifted shortly before 11 a.m.

Family and friends were stunned to learn of Ersilia Matarazzo’s death.

"It makes no sense this woman gave you beautiful kids, and you guys had a beautiful life. Why do that?" said Tiffany Sabella, a family friend.

Family and friends met to console each other at her parent's home in Everett.

"I was devastated. I was sick to my stomach that anybody could even do that," Sabella said.

She can't fathom the toll the tragedy is taking.

“How could you do this how could you hurt your family?" she said.

Ersilia Matarazzo worked at St. Anthony’s Parish for the last 20 years. She was also a member of the city’s board of assessors.

“It’s sad. It’s very sad to see somebody get killed. I don’t know for what," said neighbor Ayman Ramadan.

Sabella said the murder leaves her frustrated.

"I’m angry about it.. There’s too much violence nowadays and nothing can be done to stop it," she said.
