While West Nile Virus can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe disease. Most people infected with West Nile Virus will have no symptoms. Symptoms, however, tend to include fever and flu-like illness. In rare cases, more severe illness can occur.

The state is advising residents to avoid getting mosquito bites by applying insect repellent when outdoors, staying indoors from dusk to dawn, wearing long-sleeved clothing to protect themselves, and draining standing water from areas around their homes.
