ARLINGTON, Mass. — Arlington Police said the driver who hit a man with his car and took off on Saturday night has been identified as an 80-year-old Cambridge man.

Police said the man thought he struck a rock, and will be cited for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash with injuries.

Answering a 911 call reporting the accident, police found the 48-year-old pedestrian from Baldwinville, Massachusetts, laying in the road in the area of 112 Mass. Ave shortly after 10 p.m.

He was brought to an area hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, according to Arlington Police Chief Julie Flaherty. As of Sunday morning, he is reported to be in stable condition.

“We would like to thank the Cambridge Police Department and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section for their assistance with the investigation,” said Chief Flaherty. “Thanks to all of their help, we’ve been able to identify the operator of the vehicle.”

The driver will be arraigned at a later date at the Cambridge District Court.
