DA: Apparent homicide under investigation in Hyannis

HYANNIS, Mass. — An apparent homicide is under investigation in Hyannis, according to the district attorney.

A large police presence was scene Wednesday afternoon on Yarmouth Road in Hyannis. Members of a SWAT team were also on scene.

According to two witnesses, the victim fell in the middle of the road after what looked like a stabbing at around 2 p.m.

"There was some, you know, fighting going on outside and about five minutes later the guy comes stumbling out into the middle of the road, laying in the street, I thought he was hit by a car," said one witness who preferred to remain anonymous.

One man who works in the area said he heard an altercation beforehand at an auto shop, while another woman said it seemed as though the victim, a man, was trying to run away from someone.

"The guy was in the road he was distressed, a woman stopped," said the witness, who preferred to remain anonymous. "I saw when the woman stopped her car and got out of her car to assist a man in the road I called 911 because I didn't know what happened, I knew something was wrong and then the police came very quickly."

Barnstable Police and State Police are assisting in the investigation.

Authorities have not commented on any arrests, but the Cape and Island District Attorney's office said the victim died at the hospital from his injuries.

Police in full SWAT gear surrounded nearby businesses for hours. Several cars were towed from the scene as well.

Other people in the area said the victim was a well-known member of the community, but his name has not been released yet.
