2-year-old girl loses toe at Buzzards Bay Park

BOURNE, Mass. — The playground and splash pad at Buzzards Bay Park are closed after a toddler lost a toe Tuesday afternoon.

Bourne Police Detective Sergeant John R. Stowe Jr. confirmed to Boston 25 News the child suffered “the loss of a lower extremity.” The extremity is believed to be a toe.

Police and EMTs responded to the scene around 1:15 p.m.

Firefighters say the 2-year-old girl was wet and not wearing water shoes. As she slid down a metal slide, one of her toes reportedly got caught in the crack.

Bourne Deputy Fire Chief David Pelonzi told Boston 25 News the child was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence for treatment.

Immediately following the injury, the town shut down the splash pad and playground.

Bourne Recreation Department posted on Facebook, “The splash pad and playground at Buzzards Bay Park are closed for maintenance until further notice.”

People who have been to the park tell Boston 25 News the slide had been broken with a crack for at least a week. They said officials put caution tape up, but kids would tear it down and slide anyway.

The new $2 million playground and splash pad at Buzzard's Bay Park officially opened on May 25.
