CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Cambridge Police Department is using new technology to combat package thefts.
According to Cambridge police, so far this year through November, there have been 82 packages stolen from doorsteps and lobbies, down from 121 a year ago.
Police expect more stolen packages now that the holiday season is here so extra attention is being focused on certain neighborhoods across the city, including the hot spot where a decoy package was planted.

"I'm pretty confident that if there is somebody out here committing these crimes, especially in the area, we will catch them with this device," said Cambridge Police Department Officer William LaMonica.
That device is the decoy package. Officers planted it on the steps of a home that has had two packages recently stolen. The fake package has a GPS planted in it so police can track it on their phones and make a bust.
"It's certainly disappointing to see. People put a lot of time and effort in shopping for a gift to not have it delivered is certainly disappointing to them, so if we can make the holiday special for someone, that's what we intend to do," Cambridge Lt. Sil Ferreira.
It's not just package decoys, Cambridge police officers are also going door-to-door warning neighbors about the thefts.

Webster Vonbard says he always worries about thefts around the holidays.
"It stinks because you're relying on people to do the right thing, so hopefully that happens," said Vonbard.
To prevent package thefts, police recommend to request to have someone sign for your package, or have it delivered to a friend, neighbor or to your work.
