Patrons flock to Hilltop as restaurant closes doors

SAUGUS, Mass. – The line was out the door at the Hilltop Steakhouse as customers flocked to have one last meal at the iconic Saugus restaurant before its doors were closed for good Sunday.

The Route 1 landmark was open for 52 years and, at one time, served more than 2.4 million guests annually. It was known for its giant neon cactus, fiberglass cows and numerous dining rooms named after western cities.

A FOX 25 photographer at the restaurant for the closing said patrons were waiting more than two hours to get in Sunday.

Restaurant management cited changes in customer demographics, increased competition and cost of operation as the reason for the closure.
