2 Mass. Sam's Clubs to close at end of January

SEEKONK, Mass. — Two Massachusetts Sam's Clubs are set to close at the end of January, Walmart Stores, Inc. announced in a press release Friday.

The Sam's Clubs in Fall River and Seekonk will close to the public on Jan. 28, said Walmart, which owns the retail warehouse Sam's Club.

The company said it will close 269 stores in the U.S. and internationally, displacing about 16,000 workers, after a performance review of its nearly 11,600 stores worldwide. The release stated a large portion of the closings will be of the smaller-format Walmart Express stores, a pilot program in place since 2011.

Walmart said it hopes the majority of the workers will be able to relocate to other nearby locations. The retail giant added it will provide 60 days of pay plus resume and interview skills training to associates who cannot relocate.

The only remaining Sam's Club in Massachusetts is in Worcester.
