2 injured in NH snowmobiling accident

SALEM, NH (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Police say two people were injured in a snowmobile accident early Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to Arlington Pond just after 3 a.m. and discovered that a Yamaha snowmobile had crashed into an exposed rock and thrown 55-year-old Karen Scanlon, who had been driving, and 53-year-old Brien Mountjoy, a passenger, off of the machine.

Neither of the victims had been wearing helmets and both struck additional rocks after the initial collision.

Scanlon was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for her injuries and was later released. Mountjoy, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was taken to Holy Family Hospital and later transferred to Mass. General.

The accident remains under investigation, though preliminary reports indicate that poor visibility played a role in the crash.
