Dion Lewis out for season with torn ACL

By: TOM LEYDEN

Patriots running back Dion Lewis, who left the Patriots game against Washington in the third quarter with a knee injury, will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. The news was first reported by The Boston Globe.

Lewis, after receiving a pass from Tom Brady, was injured as he made a cut on the turf. His left leg appeared to buckle as he cut right before hitting the ground.

Lewis was able to walk off the field on his own power, but went straight to the Patriots locker room for further evaluation. He was ruled out before the end of the third quarter.

In seven games this season, Lewis has been an integral part of the New England offense, rushing for 234 yards while catching 36 passes for 388 yards. He's also scored four touchdowns this season.

Brandon Bolden, who replaced Lewis after the injury, scored the Patriots final touchdown in Sunday's 27-10 win over Washington.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick shared his thoughts on Bolden's contribution during a conference call Monday morning.

"Brandon has grown a lot. He came in as we know undrafted and kind of earned his spot on the team, but he’s shown to be a dependable player on all four downs, plays a lot for us on fourth down, but made plays in the passing game, made plays in the running game yesterday. He’s done that for us in the past. He’s got good size, good run skills. He’s a good blocker in pass protection. He catches the ball well. He’s got good run skills. And I’d say each year he’s gotten a little bit better and understands his role, is always ready and prepared and has stepped in and consistently done a good job for us. I’m glad we were able to get him extended last year. He’s been a valuable player for us for several years, but really he’s allowed us in a lot of cases to just carry three backs to the game because he can really back up running or passing situations, however the first two guys, however that goes, but he’s able to give you quality depth there really on all four downs."

James White, a second-year pro out of Wisconsin who was inactive Sunday for the game against Washington, is also on the Patriots 53-man roster.
