BOSTON — Reverend J. Donald Monan, who presided as president at Boston College from 1972-1996, was honored Friday afternoon as Boston College High School dedicated its baseball field in his honor.
The 91 year-old Jesuit priest was on hand as the school played its first game at the renovated park, renamed "Monan Park" on Friday afternoon.
Monan Park will be used by both the BC High baseball team and the UMass-Boston baseball team. Designed to replicate the dimensions of Fenway Park, the new field boasts state-of-the-art characteristics.
The park was named Fr. Monan to honor his outstanding educational leadership, vision, and commitment to the City of Boston. In that spirit, several tournaments and Greater Boston youth leagues will play at Monan Park each summer once the BC High and UMB seasons conclude.
Monan Park sits within the property lines of BC High and includes the following attributes:
•
Full-sized competition stadium for high school and collegiate level games. The main field is the exact dimensions of Fenway Park and includes fencing, bullpens, warning track, batter’s eye, full-sized dugouts and batting cages.
•
A full synthetic turf facility, with clay pitcher’s mound.
•
Stadium seating for 500 spectators, full lighting for evening games and practices, and a press box.
•
Secondary playing field suitable for practice, sub-varsity games and community use.
•
Full-sized soccer field within secondary baseball field.
