LOWELL, Mass. — A Worcester woman has been arrested and charged in the death of a Lowell mother over the weekend.
The family of Gloribel Orengo, 44, told FOX25 the mother died after a fight in Lowell Saturday night. The family said the woman's 28-year-old son, who has Down syndrome, witnessed it all.
Police said their early investigation indicated that the woman, Gloribel Orengo, was one of several people asked to leave a party at a home on Pawtucket Boulevard. At that point, police said there was a fight and she suffered serious injuries.
Amirilies Huertas-Perez. a 23-year-old Worcester woman, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.
“It's hurting me knowing she should be charged with murder, and the other kids that are still on the run,” Orengo's son said.
Emotions of anger and pain overflowed as family and friends of Orengo walked out of Lowell District Court Tuesday.
Orengo's loved ones looked on as prosecutors outlined the events of Saturday night when they say Orengo and her special needs son were kicked out of a party in Lowell.

The argument turned violent in the parking lot and that's when they say Huertas-Perez, along with several other women and possibly men, beat and attacked Orengo.
Prosecutors said Huertas-Perez hit Orengo over the head twice with a full bottle of Hennessey while her son looked on.
But the defense argued with the autopsy results still pending, the state can't prove Orengo was killed from the blows to her head. The defense suggested she may have also been run over.
The state says the driver and Huertas-Perez drove off after the fight in a stolen SUV. The driver has not been arrested or charged.
Huertas-Perez was ordered released on $30,000 cash bail.
