Woman in motorized wheelchair injured in hit-and-run crash

LOWELL, Mass. - A 46-year-old woman riding a mobility scooter was injured in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday night in Lowell.

Lowell Police say the woman, who was identified as "Donna" by her daughter, was hit just after 10 p.m. Tuesday night by dark-colored SUV near the Dunkin Donuts on Middlesex Street.

One of Donna’s legs was nearly severed, requiring hours of surgery.

Donna’s daughter, Mariah Mitchell, shared an update with Boston 25 News Wednesday.

“She had a breathing tube, so she couldn’t talk, but she was opening her eyes and I was asking her questions and she was nodding her head,” Mitchell explained.

She says a medical condition left her mother paralyzed for years. But recently, she started walking again.

Doctors now say they may have to amputate Donna's injured leg.

“She just got to where she wanted to be and now this happens,” Mitchell said. “I just don't think it's fair.”

Mitchell said she believes the driver must have known they hit someone

Donna’s family and friends ask that driver to do the right thing and turn themselves in.

Police say they have no information on suspects.

Anyone with information should call Lowell Police.
